Question about maple seeds

Hi, I just grabbed some maple seeds from a nearby tree and I was wondering if they needed a cold period before they would germinate. If they don't need stratification then do you think that I could sow some seeds now and grow them on a windowsill or under a plant light over the winter? I'm not sure what kind of maple they are either. They had small red star shaped leaves. Well...kinda star shaped.

The seeds of these red maples here in Florida start sprouting when they hit the ground - even on asphault parking lots. I guess it depends on what kind of maple it is and whatever it is used to in the wild.

Maple seeds dont last long plant them imedietly(I think they die after a month or something of storage)

Thanks guys that's exactly what I need to know.
