Up for auction is a small specimen of Running Serviceberry, Amelanchier stolonifera. To those unfamiliar with Serviceberries, they're a NA native genus relatively unknown in the US, albeit fairly well known in Canada. Also known as Juneberries, Shadberries, and Saskatoons. They bear dark purple berries which some say taste similar to blueberries. I think they taste like Serviceberries myself. They are the authentic other ingredient in the famous native American jerky concoction pemmican. Nature's perfect food! Unlike most other members of the genus which range from large shrubs to medium sized trees, stolonifera is compact, 3'-5' high and about as wide. Of course as the genus name stolonifera would suggest, given an inch they will take a mile, horizontally speaking. The plants produce beautiful white flowers before they leaf out, which form berries which ripen in early summer. Due to the small size of this species you can easily reach all the berries the birds don't get first! Fall color is spectacular, yellows, oranges, and reds. Winter hardy to about -30F but not suited to areas warmer than zone 8. Not an easily available species, even as Serviceberries go. This plant was divided last fall and is just showing signs of breaking dormancy. I will ship bare root at my expense, US only please! Opening bid is $5. here's a link to a pic of the actual plant you're bidding on:
