My Temperate Orchid Thread

  • #21
Awesome! I cant wait to see that reginae!

  • #22
I hope it blooms this year. The abnormally hot spring we had put and end to any possible flowers on the other Cyps.

  • #23
Ok, since the Cyps don't look like they'll be blooming this year I'm gonna cheat and post some pics that my girlfriend took of them from last year.

Beautiful flowers with an interesting structure. Thanks for sharing.

Is it normal for the Cyps to skip a year or two?

  • #34
In general, not all Cyps will bloom every single year but, this is the first year that absolutely none of mine bloomed. We had a very early, very hot spring that seemed to mess them up for the season. Hopefully next year the weather will be a little more normal (if there is such a thing in New England) and they'll be in their full splendor.

I'm a big fan of the temperate/terrestrial orchids as well. I don't (yet) have the conditions to grow the native Cyps, but I will in time (have a nice oak/hickory woods on my property that just needs to be cleaned out).

I grow two Calopogon species (barbatus and tuberosus), and I have the f. alba as well. I have Pogonia o. as well, but it sent up a single leaf this year and nothing else (so far).

I just received Epipactis gigantea from a friend in California (thank you, Stephen!) and I'm looking forward to trying this CA native bog orchid on the east coast (since I'm a CA native on the east coast as well) :).

P.S. How are the moorei doing for you? Interested in more? The dividing continues and I'm looking for good homes for them with demonstrably successful growers.

Jay

Cyps are well worth the effort. I grow mine in bogs similar to but, not as wet as my Sarracenia bogs. I'd love to get some C. barbatus, let me know if you ever have any extras you'd like to trade off. I grow our local Epactis heleborine and they do well growing along side the Cyps. I've found a few west coast vendors who sell several cultivars of E.gigantea (including an amazing one with purple foliage). The moorei are doing great, very nice plants ! Thanks again !
