Fall pitchers

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to share a few Sarracenia pics.

This fall the S. leucophylla are really looking fantastic.

S. leucophylla from Perdido FL 'B'

We have seedlings of our leucos on the way.  Last spring we crossed some of our nicest forms.  We have been breeding both for color and location genome.

For the below leuco pics, the pic on the left is the pod parent (mom) and the pic on the right is the pollen parent (dad) - imagine what the babies will look like...

!

Stunning.

S. leucophylla Navarre looks like its got some alata red lid in it.

Alexis,
Thanks!
S. alata does not grow in Navarre, Fl. There are no S. rubra growing there either. This plant was collected years ago, on the North side of Rt. 98, on the far side of the dune near the beach.  We have several leucos with that red coloration in the lid.

Here is a pic of S. leucophylla from Hosford FL.  No other Sarracenia grow in the same bog, so the red coloration is not from rubra or alata.

Goes to show how variable leucophylla can be then!

That is surprising variation without introgression. Are you sure that a paint brush wasn't used?

They look like fireworks. Amazing colors.

Oooooooooo... Ahhhhhhhhh... Oooooooooooh.

Looks like you held a black light up to these while taking the pictures, they're so purple! (rr, that came out sounding less flattering than it was meant to) These're really beautiful! That first picture especially is just... wow.

Oh yea,
That purple coloration is the blue sky reflecting on the shiny red tops or sides of the pitchers. Some of the dark red to black pitchers can be quite glossy! It is notieable to the naked eye, but most people sort of filter it out. The digital camera sort of makes you see it.

Alexis,
Fantastic!!! Is that cultivar a mitchelliana?

  • #17
Hi Trent. It's S.x mitchelliana x leucophylla pink. Pitcher start off white, then turn pink and finish a deep red and magenta. The areoles literally look luminous.

It went into tissue culture last year and is a kind of British Judith Hindle
