do flower buds have to look like berries?

Every year I lose most, if not all of my red Sarr flower buds and I think birds mistake them for red berries.  The buds are snapped off cleanly and often still lying in the pot or nearby.  But when I had S. flavas, their yellow buds were never bothered.  That's why I think it must be birds, since this time of year they go for red fruit and don't bother with yellow.  Dirty, disgusting, filthy, lice-ridden birds.

i had that problem the one year I lived in Virginia Beach. something was cutting them off. i figured either birds or squirrels. i can't remember if it was just the red ones or not.

All is not lost - another has emerged. There's still one on the S. jonesii too.

Put out some bird seed nearby so they have something else to eat other than faux-berries.
