was wondering, should i fill the traps with water

I never have, and I've never had a problem.
 
You don't need to. In the wild, a little squirrel with a water can doesn't come up to it and fill it :p.

Most Sarracenia have a hood that pretty effectively prevents rain water from coming in. [i/]S. purpurea[/i] does not- but that's because it actually does require water to be added to the pitchers.
