Insulating with snow

It has been snowing a bit earlier around here than usual. Today we are expecting around three inches on top of two inches already on the ground. I took some cardboard and placed it on top of a 1 gallon pot I have my sarrs in. then I piled snow on top of and around the pot. Do you think that this will work as an insulator? Have any of you tried this before with an above ground pot?

Igloos are naturally insulated because the snow is a wonderful insulator, here in Canada many people cover their temperates with snow.
