Photo One year Old Sar Seedlings

Just wanted to share a photo and encourage anyone here who wants to grow Sarracenia from seed but was reluctant to try. They really grow and develop quickly. These seedlings are a year old...... an S. flava, a S. leucophylla, and a S. oreophila. They are in 3" pots.

Here are some 6-month old Sarracenia seedlings, seed from Brooks Garcia.

Finally, some very young (2-3 weeks (?) old) of S. rosea 'luteola'.

I was just thinking that if I did crosses I would send you the seeds. Because you're good at that.

Woah....those are only 1 year old?! What have you been feeding them?! :0o:

I must be oing something wrong mine are not even close to that size

This makes me really wish I didn't screw up by trying to put my Sarracenia seedlings outside multiple times... Mine germinated in August last year...and they're still making pitchers like your S. rosea... Then again, it's a hybrid with psittacina and minor, but still. :x They need to grow next year.

Jeez Chris, my luteolas from your seeds still don't have pitchers yet! And I only have two sprouts so far, but I have high hopes! (If I could find my camera, I'd get pics. :()

How fast are yours growing?

I am growing these under flurorescent lights.............regular 4-foot fluorescent bulbs in a standard shop light (cheap). the soil is mostly peat......but I mix in some course sand, a little bit of perlite, and a little bit of bark and soil from underneath a pitch pine (including some broken down pine needles etc.). I initially fill a 3" pot with this mixture and add a little live Sphagnum on top. the seeds are then planted, and the whole thing is watered and then goes into a zip-loc bag and into the fridge for a couple of weeks. I then remove it and it goes undert the lights (about 1-foot underneath) in a room that is kept about 71. They stay in the zip-loc during germination. As the seedlings develop new leaves they will be transplanted into plastic bathroom cups with a hole cut in the bottom, usually two plants per cup. I think the little bit of real "soil" in with the peat may provdie some extra nutrients. Later I may transplant into 3" pots like shown, but they can stay in the bathroom cups a long time. I do not supplement with any fertilizer although the plants do catch fungus gnats and sometimes fruti flies on occasion. I wish I had the time or space to do more.....basically I am working in a very tiny area. I do want to give these luteolas special care/treatment.....hope to be able to distribute them here!
Happy holidays to everyone here on Terraforums!

Impressive seedlings there! Keep up the good work! :)

Just wondering how long a picture lives on seedlings as it seems like on mine on 2-3 pictures stay green while the older pictures dye. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong. Mine are growing in peat perlite mix in a tray of water under 40 watt flourescent. Just curious as mine are growing but just very very slowly except for my oreophylla which seems to be growing quicker.

Do you keep the lights on 24x7? I've heard Sarr seedlings can handle (and enjoy) 24x7x365 light the first 2 years.
