I must have opened a controversial can of worms. I would agree with Fred P on this. From my research J.H. Mellichamp (1875) (not Darwin) conducted the first experiments showing evidence of the pitcher fluid hastening the decomposition of insects from his "kitchen" experiments w/ S. minor, then S. variolaris.
