Red Heliamphora roots

Heliamphora tatei var. neblinae x hispida (Wistuba)
One of my personal favs

True red is more than just skin deep, it runs all the way to the root :p

Very nice pics Av8tor1!

That's a mighty root system!

Do you think there could be a reason that the roots or red? Or is that just the way the plant grows?

...

:hail: hail the almighty Av8tor...

the roots are as lovely as the pitchers themselves. very nice pictures :)

i would have to assume many factors come into play, but it does seem unique to this particular plant (at least to this extent)

This is the same plant that was the top dollar plant in last years NASC auction

(hint hint hint) LOL

To be honest, it doesnt look near like it should.... it has been moved to one end of the rack so it doesnt get full lighting like it should.

Here is last years offspring in all her glory:

Lovely plant :)
How on earth did you get it to that size? Mine one is refusing to put on any growth and is still in the juvenile growth size like it came from the factory!! And that was 5 years ago!!

cheers

Bill,

I don't know what to tell ya, Ive been asked the same thing by others who are growing this species. (Sockholm and David to name a couple)

To be honest, these pics aren't even a good representation... its been repeatedly divided.
It been a beast for me, last year it had pitchers over a foot tall
Since then its been divided 3 times and Ive cut back on my feedings, that was just too tall for my plant rack.
I had one nectar spoon I could actually stick my thumb in (no exaggeration!)

ummm hillbilly voodoo (?)

me dunno but it does love to be fed

(quietly slaps Zu on back of head and gives her chocolate.... hush woman, dont tell allllllllll my secrets :p )

FWIW:

Lighting = 6 bulb T5 w/Giesemann Powerchrome "Midday" Full spectrum bulbs
(very nice spectra, good red performance)
18/6 summer photoperiod
12/12 winter photoperiod
Distance to plant: <6"
Humidity >80% w/constant gentle airflow when lights are on
Temps = winter 50ish F/ summer 68ish F with minimal (if any) day/night differential

Substrate:
Approx, I don't measure too closely... a hand full of this a hand full of that, must drain extremely well but hold moisture and provide structure for the root mass.
1p APS/Turface
1p Cypress bark
1p LFS
1p Perlite
Just a touch of sand

Monthly Ampacbiotech.com Trichoderma atroviride application
Monthly Root feeding: 1/4 strength Maxsea or Non Urea orchid food
Pitcher feeding: Cichlid Fish pellets and dehydrated flies (reptile food)

that's the whole routine,

wow m8! That looks awsome. You still haven't built up that new plant rack...haven't you?? Tsk tsk!! :p Now if you would have already made it, you would have gotten room to let that beast grow un-controlled.
