Flower Watch 2012

Nice to see/hear about everyone's progress! Most of my Sarrs are still asleep and show no buds yet.

kulamauiman, please post a picture of your flava var. ornata's pitchers if you can. They are always a treat to see. I think I recall seeing pictures of them last year. :)

im pretty sure it was rot of some sort. i had them right next to (sometimes above, i moved the pot occasionally)a heating vent from about late november to late december, a seriuosly stupid mistake. this probably set the stage for a fungus fest in their pots. when i realized this, i moved them to a basement window that doesnt get much light in a pretty cool room. come to think of it it may have been too warm, does the fact that the homes heating system is in the room make it much warmer?
the plants were all the way on the other side of the room, and weere close to the window, so i assumed they were cool enough. it was too late however, and the rizomes turned brown. the purp totally rotted, and the other one was just turning rotten when i checked it, by the look of the rizome. i should have put them there to begin with , and probably should have used a fungicide of some sort. i think this is how i will do nekn years dormancy, unless i make an in the ground bog, in which case i will leave them outdoors under pine mulch. oh, i didnt actually see any fuzz or mushrooms or anything, but the peat looks like muck and smells like crap, so i suspect that something was rotting in there.

WOW......LLOOOOONG POST ... sorry about that

Don't sweat it. All of us have made mistakes, and I know I have killed my share of plants. Keep plugging away and you'll be rewarded.

I've never been able to contribute to this thread and I doubt I will be able to this season either.

So far all I have pushing up flowers right now are flavas, and lots of em! I imagine the Oreo and flava hybrids aren't far beind... Still way early in comparison to last year... I don't think I saw my first buds until the end of march.... This year I saw my first ones in the beginning of January, though they quickly died off after the wicked snow and ice storm we had. Hopefully I get a chance to do some hybridizing and species making this year....

Still no sign of flowers here.

D'awww nice flowers, mine are still sleeping. They all look super healthy along with my dionaea, can't wait!

I have a purpurea and a flava red tube one bud on each. I hope they just stay small until spring really starts, especially since the snow has begun to fall again. This warm weather really has been throwing them off.

  • #31
I've got three buds popping up now, already tied last spring's record! Though back then I only had two sarrs. I'm hoping for (expecting?) some buds on a few more plants too.

Mine just opened up. I live in southern CT, but I put them out in a coldframe mid February to give them a jump start. I can't post pics of all my plants, so here are some of my favorites. I love Sarracenia, the kings of CPs! imo opinion of coarse :)

So far as it stands,

S. flava var. maxima
S. flava var. rugelii
S. flava var. flava
S. flava var. cuprea
S. flava var. rubricorpora
S. flava var. rubricorpora "Red Velvet"
S. purpurea subsp. purpurea
S. purpurea subsp. purpurea f. Heterophylla
S. purpurea subsp. venosa var. montana
S. 'Leah Wilkerson'
S. oreophila
S. 'Doreens Colossus'
S. jonesii
S. alabamensis

More to come i think too, these are just the species and varieties in flower, some plants like flava var dozens of flowers, one plant that has filled an 8" pot has 15-20 currently.

I haven't had a double bud in a number of years now so I thought I would share this photo taken yesterday. BTW - I counted 540 buds last weekend and about 15% of my plants haven't even started sending up buds yet. :)

That's quite unusual, Fred. The scape isn't even fused.
Still nothing in VA.
