Sarrs in CO

  • #141
That time of year when I really start finding out what is going to survive, and what isn't ('Red Viper' and minor okee on the list of things needing replacement...), and oh so many flowers....my sister has finally noticed that flava and its hybrids tend to have an awkward smell as well, and she's not happy with me.

Things were looking good...and then unfortunately shortly thereafter the weathr flipped on me and one more cold snape passed through. That cold, combined with just the transition into full sun, I think has killed about a third of the flowers I had. Still leaves me with a lot of flowers...but unfortunately, as it always has to be apparently, the buds that bit it were frequently the ones with crosses I was most looking forward to...

Looks great!

There was a bit of trouble in late June...I went on a trip to New Mexico to document wildlife, parents weren't quite sure how much water all of the plants should get, so....
Nothing died, but a lot of nice beautiful pitchers went crispy early. So did most of my attempted crosses when the flowers went first.
A few things escaped the crisping though, or have grown out since:

These went crispy, were taken before the event:

Season's coming to an end...and I'm starting to make divisions of a bunch of things that desperately need it (all of the extra divisions currently going into bags though because I have nowhere else to put them...). Last hurrah of fall's pitcher crops:

My first purp hetero flower in years...naturally crossed with AF leuco
S. purpurea heterophylla by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
Also, it's one of the handful of flowers still alive after a hailstorm while I was in Oklahoma stripped everything that I finally put outside into the new bed:
Sarracenia bed by Hawken Carlton, on Flickr
This bed is now nearly full one end to the other with all the extra divisions I still need to get rid of too, and I will likely have to start looking at digging the second (already have a liner, it's just the time it'll take...).

This year has been hectic and I've hardly had time to actually monitor the Sarracenia pool very well (though I have, sadly, lost the 'Adrian Slack' that always had a bit of trouble here), but slowly things are starting to look nice again. Thinking I might have better luck soon if I can get a setup around them that can act as greenhouse in winter, mild shade cover in summer.
The one photo I've taken so far since putting everything out:

This year hasn't been the greatest for getting good-looking traps (hail right at the start, cool temps into July, and then basically no rain from mid-July until now...). But, the fall flush produced some things, so here's the last flood of pics for this year probably....

Now, the pools are covered in a hoop frame with greenhouse plastic, I'm hoping it'll be enough to keep temps above the too-cold points that we'll reach in January, because I can no longer keep all this inside...

swaniana and Red Beret both look like they could be interesting, thanks for sharing.

  • #158
'Red Beret' is a cultivar of my own naming, for which I've gotten a lot of flak...but it's like a red-lidded alata on steroids and when it's happy has immaculate shape, so I don't regret making that decision.

  • #159
The pool as of currently; it's withstood temps down as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit with the main pool barely frosting up and the other one pretty well freezing solid temporarily. We'll see what happens if and when we get storms that hit the negatives though...

The coldest temperatures we've experienced so far were somewhere around -18 degrees Fahrenheit... some daytimes didn't really get above zero either.

To my surprise, looking under most things still look alive in there now. But only come spring will I know for sure...
