Testing out the Beamworks LED Pent 36" HI Lumen Timer Ready 6500K on Cephalotus

  • #21
Here is how I mounted it up. The mounting hardware.:) A couple of screws and some small chain taken apart. Left side mount. In place. Light on. Light level with t 8 fixture. T8 fixture with Beamworks in place but off. Both fixtures on. Lights on, plants back in place. I don't know how well my camera shows things, there is lots more light here. It has only been a couple of days, but I see the edges of one of the pings coloring up, others as well, but that may be my imagination. I can certainly see things better particularly the sundews dew.

Here the ping. And the dew. The Nep in the back. Couple of pygmy's.

  • #23
Are you using both the LED and the T8?

  • #24
I have only had it in place of about three days. One day both, then I thought maybe just the new one. I may have to try it for a few weeks both ways and see. I don't know if the extra light is worth the expense of running both fixtures.

Heck yeah, good to have you in the thread with updates as well Pearldiver. I'll have some shots of my ceph up tomorrow. Things looking really good.

Here are some pics of my cephs right now. They are doing pretty good.

Here they are in a video a couple days ago starting at 2:14.

A couple pics of my "Big Boy." I think I spotted the unopened trap around Jan. 2. So if it opens in the next 3-4 days it will have basically taken a month to grow. I've never grown Cephs under any other light so I don't have anything to compare to. I feel like this is pretty decent growth though.

I've put some sundews and leaf cuttings under my LEDs now as well. I just moved them today. All the cephs are looking good and growing now. I didn't take pics of all of them. Here's what's going on under the lights now.

Things looking great! My concern with this light setup is the amount of lumens, but clearly this is working great for you!

I hear you, I have 2 of these fixtures so the shelf has 11.5K lumens.

I should mention my fixtures have been adjusted to run 13.5 hours each day now as well. They have been at 12 hours for winter for 8 weeks or so. I plan on kicking it up to 15 at the beginning of March.

Awesome! Not trying to derail your post, but here is what I use https://www.hydrogrowled.com/189X-PRO---290W-LED-Grow-Light-P86C60.aspx Something very similar to this, same specs not as much as a price tag

That looks really nice, I prefer the 6500k LEDs because I like the way the plants look in the white light and LEDs put out the highest lumens per watt at that spectrum. I've been looking and looking for a larger light like that around 300 watts comprised of 6500K LEDs, but haven't had any luck.

I have experienced amazing coloring under the leds, however, I am with you white light is better. The pinkish tint messes with my eyes. :p

A couple more shots, the first two before and after a few weeks under the light fixture.

Looking pretty good, a little red, but I bet they get used to it after another week or so and go green again. What are those smaller neps btw, rafflesiana or x hookeriana perhaps?

Oh man this is very intriguing. Do you guys think I should buy this LED setup instead of this one? http://htgsupply.com/Product-HTG-Supply-2-Foot-4-Lamp-High-Output-T5

And does this LED setup last nearly as long? How expensive is it to replace the bulbs?

Im thinking of getting it for my D. binata, capensis and dichrosepalla seedlings, along with maybe some VFTs. Will it be sufficient for these light hungry plants?

Look at it this way Brian. The initial costs are similar. The edge in output goes to the T5s, but probably not by as wide a margin as the raw numbers would lead you to believe. The fluorescents lose intensity much quicker. They should be replaced at least yearly. Many reef aquarists replace them every 6-8 months. The cost of 2 full replacements is about the cost of the led fixture.

I don't believe this fixture has replacable lamps. At least no mention in the literature. I have yet to fool with setting up the timer I bought. I just turn it on when I get up, and off when I get ready to hit the sack for the most part.

Plus I figure by the time it needs replacement something better/cheaper/smaller/higher output might be available. Though I did toy with the idea of getting another one to stockpile for the future. Surely it is good for one to three years I hope, anyways.
