Does anyone know why there would be spider webs from one trumpet of my pitcher plant to another but no spiders?
Are they living in my plant or were the webs last ditch efforts to get loose from the plant?
Spiders frequently take advantage of a pitcher plants ability to attrack bugs. Many people have found them hiding in or near the pitcher mouth to steal bugs that are drawn to the plant. Sounds like you have one hiding in your plant somewhere if the webs re-appear after you take them down.
I have seen a lot spiders around my cps since they are outside. A wolf spider lived inside the largest pitcher of my S. catesbaei all summer long. I've also noticed that preying mantises like to hang around cps too.
When I went to the Meadowview preserve in Virginia for the Fall event back in october, I spotted a purpurea pitcher that had a funnel web built right down into the mouth of the pitcher. PlantAKiss snapped a picture and posted it with some other. Link to thread follows: Meadoview Picture Thread
I thought I had what was a spider web on my plants. I left it alone for a while. Then I started noticing holes in the lids of my pitchers. In the crease of the lid there was a little worm 1/8" long. He did not make it.
Did I mention that this plant is IN my house?? Spiders don't really bother me. When I find one in the house, I usually pick it up with a paper towel and escort it outside.
I wiped away the webs. We'll see if they reappear in the coming days.
