Yes it's me and my finicky eyes that want to absolutly amke sure that this plant is indeed S. oreophila "Sand mountain" 2 reputable Sarracenia enthusiasts have said my plant is one of most royal looking S. oreophila they have ever seen before. The pitchers are unbelivable after they color up for weeks after opening.

Everything looks promising to me....what do the Sarracenia peopel have to say? Court is now in order!

Thanks

I'm not sure whether they are from the Sand Mountain plateau or not. I know that they are extremely heavily veined, but there are a few veined varieties about. This is mine from DeKalb County, Alabama:

Hi Alexis, thanks for posting that wonderful photo!

I wasn't sure about the Sand Mtn. var. or now but because they are described as "so richly coloured" I assumed it might have been that variant. I was quite surprized to see that it was this richy colored. It along with S. alabamensis and S. minor 'okee giant' were given to me because they were oringally going to be used for a wild restoration project but it never got put into action. So, with that in mind, it must be true oroephila if it was going to be introduced into the wild as oreophila.

It's a really nice plant, most oreophila are quite sparsely veined. In The Savage Garden, there's a photo of S. oreophila 'Don Schnell', which has numerous fine veins and an almost solid purple throat and nectar roll. I think the Sand Mountain variety is quite similar to this.

Mike King has virtually every sarracenia about and this is his listing for oreophila:

O1 Boaz,W,(O6,JA)
O2 Boaz,WS(MS)
O3 Boaz,W,(Clone 1,PM)
O4 Dave Taylor Clone
O5 De Kalb Co,Alab,W,(O10,JA)
O6 De Kalb Co.Alab,WS,(AP)
O7 Sand Mountain,W,(O13,JA)
O8 Centre,Alabama,W,(O8,JA)
O9 Giant,NE Georgia,W,(PM)
O10 Vigorous Clone,(PM)
O11 Pietro Paulo Clone,(O202,JA)
O12 (OR01, Rogier van Loenen)
O13 Georgia, (AF)
O14 Walker clone
O15 Clay Co.,North Carolina. W,(PW)

Yours seems to have a sharply shaped hood when looked at from below, so it's unlikely to be from the same location as mine. Mike will probably be able to identity yours - there aren't that many oreophila sites about so he might be of some help.

Hi Alexis, man thanks for that information! I'll just wait for Mike to pop in here and take a look at the plant and see if he can put a location ID on it. Thanks very much, just nice to know that this is indeed some quite wonderful form of S. oreophila.

Hi Dustin,
I have the oreophila Sand mountain photo for you. You will need to expose your plant to direct sunlight for best results and will colour up by June

Not the best photo, but there will be new oreophila photos added in the Summer

Mike, Thanks for the wonderful photo!

I'll be sure to give this plant as much sun as it can get this coming spring. Thanks for your input. What variety do you think it may be? Thank you!

Great! Thanks Mike! Are they also from the Sand Mtn. plateau or just a different richly coloured variant?

Its so hard to say, most of the sites in the Sandhill/mtn plateau area are noted for the heavily veined forms. Have you asked the person who supplied it?

All I was told was from Mike Catalani (CpJungle) was that it was a very regal form as far as he could recall. He didn't say it was Sand Mtn. form or not but he did remember it was a very pretty plant. It was all etiolated when I got it because it was all bagged up to go into the wild for re-introduction like I said earlier. Well, I appreaciate all your help Mike and Alexis on this. Thank you!
