@#$%! birds

mad.gif

They ignored a pot full of yellow S. flava buds but, once again, are attacking S. leucophylla and S. purpurea buds.  They either peck at or snap the buds right off.  But always leave them lying right there.

I've thought of bagging the buds, but the birds always strike when the buds begin to open.  I assume the yellow buds, like yellow strawberries and yellow raspberries, just aren't attractive to birds.

How to make a blowgun:

take a 2 or 3 foot pvc pipe. Then, roll up a 1/2, up to 1 inch paper cone which fits into the tube exactly. Cut a piece of wire hanger about 3 to 5 inches, or unfold a large paper clip. Place this metal rod into the point of the cone so one of its ends is in the cone and the other end protrudes a few inches from the point of it. Hot glue the wire to the cone.

Well, this doesn't always work (and with some birds actually attracts them) but you can try tying long strips of foil to the stem to scare the birds.
