N. campanulata - what media you use?

Local growers have been wondering why

1. there are blotches of yellow on the leaves here and there
2. the oldest leaf turns yellow then black very quickly when the plant is putting out larger pitchers

I am wondering if the media is the cause of the rapid blackening of leaves. Is there absence of some essential mineral(s)? And would fertilising help?

Anyone growing this species please kindly give your comments. :)

Here is an example of my own plant. The three oldest leaves are turning black with the production of the pitcher.

The pitcher is reaching 2.5" but the previous one was only 1.5". It looks like the plant put in lots of its energy into producing a larger pitcher.

There is a beautiful and extremely large N. campanulata on e-bay right now from a Fl. grower. Plant in picture has numerous large pitchers and no black leaves. Maybe you can get in touch with him through e-bay??? Looks like he has this plant growing extremely well and if it is a soil diificiency he would know. I myself have never kept N. campanulata/very hard to come by. Is on my wish list.

macamus3,

I googled it but I can't find the link. Could you post it here for me please? :)

Thanks.

Just type in Nepenthes on ebay (the american ebay) and there's only one N. campanulata that shows up.

www.ebay.com Then type nepenthes in catagory field. I don't know- may have different address if out of the USA??? Hope this helps. I wanted this plant but is out of my range.

Thanks! I'll see if he is willing to help me out. ;)

No joke, the price is atrocious. Remember earlier this year when they cost $30 and everywhere had them?
Either way, I tend to stay away from eBay. What usually happens is theres 1 or 2 people that bid on every single thing, which drives the price up, then they only bid on one or two items, driving the pirce up even more, then eventually giving up. Its like I see the same names as high bidder but never winner for everything.

I have been in those before, lol.
Sometimes, you can throw a number you think is reasoable and get lucky. Not often though. And yes, a "high roller" shows up occasionally and dominates for a few months, winning all auctions.
Cindy, the first camp in the US(June 2000) was potted in 50/50 peat/perlite and it did fine. You can also ask Schloaty, who has a prize winner of one, or Phicula. Mine are in lfs(what they arrived in from MT-when they carried them for $20!!!)but not in a warm tank, so they could grow better.

Cheers,

Joe

I sure don't remember them being everywhere early this year. I must have missed it :( Luckily after a three year search a 6 mm. plant was sent to me this morning :)

Sam Leilani has very nice plants too. Might want to ask him. I've always heard they are real sun worshipers compared to other Nepenthes. I've heard they do fine in lowland, intermediate, and highland conditions.

I have two very happy camps - in almost opposite media.

My female is growing like mad in LFS mixed with schultz orchid mix.

My male is growing in....I'm not sure what, but it's dense like concrete. I got it in trade from Dave Evans - I think he said pete & lime? Whatever it is, it's hard as a rock, but the plant is growing fine.

Both are spiking, and have done so in the past, too.....so they must be happy.

6mm?? :0o:

Thanks for all your help, everyone.

Marc, the guy selling that N. campanulata on the ebay has replied me about his growing conditions and media. Thanks, Marc!

Robert, I can't find clay nuggets so far but I'll try again this weekend. :-(

Thats the biggest I could get without spending $135 USD

I'm more than pleased with the size :)

EDIT: SORRY! No wonder you were surprised! I meant 6 CENTIMETERS! not MILLIMETERS! Big difference there!

Is there any BE distributor in your area? Rob has them for sale with at least 5cm across. Recently, the species appeared on the pricelist and everyone here went crazy...they e-mailed, PMed, SMSed, phoned...and tried to order the plant! :-O

Hello cindy my friend.
Here is my media. peat : coir : charcoal : orchid bark 5:2:1:2
Roughly are those media, and there also has something media I don't know how to spell that.(sorry about my poor english. )
I gather the problem was not on media.
In mine experience, perhaps he got too much shine.(try to shaded some shine.)
N.campanulata is very cute lowland nepenthes.
He likes growing in the place where have high and stable humidity.
so if the humidity too low or change usually. the oldest leaf will turns black very quickly.
Wish those can help you.

Hi Joe,
I can't tell you...or anyone here. ;)

Duckking,
Thanks.

Ducking,

Regarding the high humidity, I don't think that's so true.

Both mine grow quite happily in my grow chamber. My humidity fluxuates between 40 and 65%. Almost never goes above 65% (maybe at night when it cools off some).

Oddly, my Bical is growing happily, too, which is another one that supposedly has to have really high humidity.

Credit JMatt with this pic, from the NECPS show - this only shows the PUPS. The mother plant is off to the side of the pic, and easily 3 x the diameter of most of these pups.
