    Carnivorous orchids?

Last night, my mother-in-law pointed out that I missed a show on Carnivorous Orchids. It was aired on NHK (Japanese Channel) and apparently the description of the show stated that the south american orchids would lure, trap and digest their prey like sarracenia. Is this a recent discovery? Has...

    Flowering in plants...

Hope someone can help me... Exactly what is the mechanism that triggers plants to send up flower stalks? So far, I've had a D. capensis 'typical' flower and right now a vft and can't seem to find a correlation. Is it photoperiod? Energy storage? Watering frequency? Or is it different in each...

    P. ehlersiae help

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but my P. ehlersiae is producing new growth but it's brown in color rather than the usual green. I believe it's in dormancy right now because the leaves look like those of a succulent rather than flat. I'm a bit worried... Any help would be...

    Ack!... it's flowering

Ok... here's the situation: I just purchased VFT 'typical' 2 months ago and it's now flowering. I didn't put it into dormancy and it's origin is from Gublers (most likely tissue culture) nor can I tell it's history. As there have been discussions of VFTs surviving after flowering, I'm not sure...

Well, this weekend I officiallly bought my first orchid (Brassia)to go with the Phal that was given to us awhile back. My Phal, by the way, is turning brown at the point where I cut the spike and a second leaf is dying which brings it to a total of 3 leaves left. Is this normal behaviour for a...

    I'm sad...

Last night, I was in process of the weekly cage change for my guinea pig and siberian hamster when my wife and I noticed that the hamster's paws and mouth were all red with blood. It looks to me that her teeth are overgrown as her eating habits have changed also. Anybody ever encounter such a...

I was just curious... How does everybody dispose of their plant waste material? When I say "waste", I mean items such as: dying leaf cuttings excess medium seeds and medium which has not germinated dead plant etc. Thanks!

    D.capensis flowering

I don't know if this is normal or not, but my D.capensis that is flowering right now looks kind of dry. It starts off looking like a "rose bud", but as it grows, it seems to turn to a dark purple (versus bright purple) and is all wrinkly. Reminds me of a freeze dried raisin. Are the flowers...
