Where are the seeds to be found?

Fryster

--Freedom Czar--
I have some dumb questions about harvesting seeds from a couple of Drosera.

(D. capensis & D. spatulata)

After the tall stalks of these plants flower and then are hand-pollinated, and then after the flower dries and shrinks back; Just where are the seeds to be found???

Inside each little pod where the flower emerged? If so, I’m not finding any seeds. :(

Then of course I have no idea how big these seeds are anyway…

Somebody have a photo or a drawing of the exact location of the seeds for these two Drosera?

Thanx,

Should be in the pods. Either they didn't fertilize or maybe you waited too long to collect them and all the seed has blown out. My Drosera filiformis var filiformis "Florida Giant" failed to produce seed - even the flowers I hand pollinated.

If the pods are dried out, the seed should spill out if you roll or shake them.

Seeds are probably about the size or 2x of the dots of the colon -> :

Are the petals the only thing thats dry? Cause the whole pod needs to be dry, From what I read.

The entire stalk of pods are dry right now.

I guess I'll bust 'em all open and do a closer examination for seeds.

Here's a group of three stalks that I have:

The seeds should be in the tiny pods that are part of the "flower housing", is that correct?

This may be a lame question, but do you know what the seed will look like. I ask because not many new growers realize how tiny the seed is. I know I didn't. The first time I got some D. alicia seed, I thought I'd been ripped off and the other person had sent me ground up flower parts. After looking at it under a magnifying glass though I decided it might be seed and planted it.

I know what you mean...

I have broke open a couple little pods only to find nothing but the wreckage of the pod walls themselves.

Or so I thought... Perhaps those were indeed the seeds, I don't know. I was/am expecting 'lil round seeds like Poppy seeds.

Perhaps I'll just plant the remnants of the pods and see what, if anything grows. ???

The seeds should be in the ovaries of the flowers - the pod that should be within the sepals (small "leaves" at the base). See http://www.terraforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81877

The seed should just fall out when you gently squeeze and shake the pods. Roll them gently in your fingers open end pointing down at some clean white paper. See tips on harvesting seed:

The size and shape of the seed depends on the species (note the size scale in photos on first link):

It's possible you left the scapes too long and all the seed has been dispersed already.

The pods usually open on their own as the dry out. Try gently shaking the pods over a piece of white paper. If you get a little dots that role around easily, thats your seed. They will be about the size of the period at the end of this sentence.

Good deal.

I'll collect all the periods I can. ;)

Black is the color you want for seedpods, before cutting stalks. And dry is the way you want to deal with them. If you have small plastic cups you could take a few pods per cup and leave exposed to the air to dry. Eventually, the pods will release the seeds. You could also package a few pods in folded paper (Where's that post that Wicked Thistle wrote about folding the paper?) and ship to others. I have plastic centrifuge tubes that I put atlks in, opened. Then I put the cap on and shake to extract the seeds.
