Found a baby Drosophyllum for sale. Should I buy it?

Wolfn

Agent of Chaos
There is a nursery selling 3-inch tall Drosophyllum babies in peat pots.

I know this plant is a little difficult to grow, but from what I read, all I need to do is keep the soil well drained and just moist (never wet), give it as much sunlight as humanly possible, and never repot it.

Should I attempt to buy one for $20?

IIRC, they get rather huge and if they're in peat pots, repotting will be required someday, no?

But if you've got the money and confidence you can give it the conditions it needs, I'd say go for it :)

On the nursery site, it says that when the plants arrive, you take the plants in the peat pots and plant them directly into larger pots. The peat pots will dissolve over time and the plants would then permanently be grown in the larger pots.

That's what you do with poppies too, you can't transplant the seedlings successfully (or even adult plants) so you just peat pot/peat pellet the seeds and pot them on when the seeds establish.

If the price wasn't too high I'd give it a go.

I'd try sprouting seeds instead. Transplanting is risky.

I purchased one today from the nursery you're talking about, Wolfn. I justified the price because my outdoor growing conditions come very close to matching their natural environment. I can accommodate their arid and sunny needs.

A good buy if you ask me. I saw the same plant (size/age) selling for $50.00 plus an additional $5 handling fee because the vendor states the species doesn't transplant well. That's what I like about the original nursery in question, the plants are in peat pots ready to go, no transplant necessary!

I recheck my additional handling fee price quote. It's not $5, it's $15!!!!

Here it is, as referenced above! Little guy is enjoying the sunshine and gnats galore in the backyard.
