Byblis filifolia

I just recently got 6 B filifolia seeds to germinate I sowed about 10 using the 10% bleach method and 10 on mix soaked with smoke water. This is water that was poured on ash from burnt garden twigs and dry leaves, then the water is sieved. Im really amased at how fast they germinated 7-14 days and how fast the seedlings grow and that they have dew before even the cotyledons appear.

beautiful byblis :)
i hope you get seeds in the future and change with me hoho

I hope I can get seed too and maybe try propagating it the way Cindy did with her plants. Its already grown since I took the photos. Later I will put some update photos on this thread.

Nice looking seedlings!

Here is the largest of the Byblis filifolia seedlings that germinated at the end of March.

Here is a close up photo of Byblis filifolia seedling. The interesting thing is the bend in the middle of the leaf around the insect I feed it 3 days ago. As I understood it Byblis are capable of movement from the pulvinis. Is it possible they can move in other parts of the leaf?

I'm jealous. I've got a Goliath hybrid that sprouted in march, and it's still only half an inch tall. What are your conditions, soil and light wise? Also, the bending of the leaf may be caused by rot, as that is a rather large insect for the leaf width.

I dont think its rot I will be able to tell quickly any way. The leaf is still healthy and dewy looking. Its in a well drained mix kept just damp and under bright light 70% humidity or so and not too hot around 20 -28 degrees C The other 6 seedlings are all much smaller any way.

LOL! And to think I fretted about GA3! 10% bleach, like B. liniflora, was all that was necessary?

The smoke water worked as well but both bleach and smoke did not work with all the species I sowed I guess that the GA3 would work better? I just didn't have any available.

You were right hcarlton, its rot, the leaf past the insect lost all its dew, so I cut off the leaf below the insect, hopefully my over zealous feeding wont do any further harm. At least I learn t something.

How did you create smoke water?

Don't know how he did it, but I have created effctive smoke water by burning dried leaves and grass, and pouring water through it into a container, then liberally moistened the pot with it. Seems to work.

Yes that's the exact method I used it works for Drosophyllm also.

Here is new Byblis seedling this time B rorida. Its the only seed that germinated from that batch and almost straight away I noticed it had a slight red coloration. That was even before the cotyledons appeared. Now that the first true leaves are appearing you can see they are quite red. Not sure if its just the new growth that will be red and that the color will fade or if the whole plant will have a red tinge. Not sure also, if this is a common variation, it would have been nice if more seed had germinated so I could have compared and also have gotten some cross pollination going later on if I successfully grow it to maturity.
