Gemmae

Wesley

God must have an interesting sense of humor
How long can Gemmae last without being planted?

Usually about 2 weeks, but the max is 1 month.

thanks... I need to buy some moss then! LOL I just ran out.

Actually, I have had gemmae survive easily half a year - but the viability does drop off as time passes. The trick seems to be to maintain a certain precise level of moisture (not too wet, but not too dry either) and also to provide cold just above freezing. Friends have experimented with storing gemmae nearly at freezing temps in parrafin oil with viability present a year after the gemmae was harvested. This is a good area to experiment in if you have surplus gemmae.
