Actually, I have had gemmae survive easily half a year - but the viability does drop off as time passes. The trick seems to be to maintain a certain precise level of moisture (not too wet, but not too dry either) and also to provide cold just above freezing. Friends have experimented with storing gemmae nearly at freezing temps in parrafin oil with viability present a year after the gemmae was harvested. This is a good area to experiment in if you have surplus gemmae.
