Ok, I have about a million caterpillars around my property and the sarracenia aren't up yet..... Has anyone ever frozen caterpillar for later use? Thawed of course.
I can already tell some plants are hitting the slow decline to dormancy, and the rest will probably slow down soon too. Because everything is outside in natural light, or behind a window with the same, even the Neps stop pitchering for the season once the hours of daylight dips beneath their...
I saw this on the dried out leaf of my D filliformis today. I've heard horror stories of caterpillars that eat the bases of dormant plants, and so I put this in a box until I can assess what it is and what I should do with it. If it eats those annoying other plants in the bog, it goes back in...
I found this guy tucked in between some concrete landscaping blocks here in Oregon, wrapped up in a pouch that looked like matted hairs. In the pouch it didn't seem to want to move but once released it crawled away pretty quickly. I haven't been able to identify any similar butterfly or moth...
Three days ago the plant in the pic had an almost 2" spike full of fat little buds getting ready to do their thing. That evening I found a caterpillar on the plant, and a single uneaten bud. Here it is:
I'm having a new experience this year. Out of the 7 flowers growing in my sarracenia pot, two have disappeared shortly after emerging from the rhizome, apparently eaten by a pest of some sort. I haven't seen any slug slime near the plants and it seems too early in the year for caterpillars so...
Today I posted a few white box pictures of tobacco hornworms (Manduca sexta) on my blog. Apparently this species ranges into British Columbia, but I’ve never found one. And there certainly wouldn’t be any available in the wild locally at this time of year. I bought these specimens in a local per...
I've been experimenting with indoor growing as of late due to problems outdoors. I really think I may live in an environment that is too extreme for carnivorous plants. Gulf coast, Texas. Summer temps are often over 100 and humidity can be 85+ with that temperature. I put my plants out in full...
Hey everyone. I was able to finally grow Ibicella this season. I have tried growing it since 2009, but never got established plants (most likely due to using old seed leading to very low germination rates).
Although I got plants to grow, set fruit, and produce seed this year, I was not as...
As I mentioned up here, I don't feed 'beneficial' insects to my CPs (at least not deliberately) and, in fact, I have gardens planted to help increase their numbers. Around 10 years ago (give or take a few), we built a deck and a pergola overhead - off our kitchen. One of the vines I planted to...
Hey folks,
I'm spending 10 days with my dad here in St. Petersburg, Florida. I'm finding some great stuff to take photos of. I'll just throw them in this thread as they come in.
Here's an N. rafflesiana that I bought from flytrapshop for my dad
<a...
2 days ago, i just realized i had aphids on my capensis. So today i will be using my pesticide i used on countless pitchers and VFTs. wish me luck. also, i may try teasing the aphids up to the dew first, see if that works. also my milkweed has some, but i can't use pesiticide because i use it...
I had heard about the differences between the usual Wisconsin long-fibered Sphagnum moss and that imported from New Zealand or Chile. While I had never had anything but Wisconsin grown available in years past, I had recently seen the stuff from Chile and was curious. It was obviously more...
I found many monarch caterpillar eggs on milkweed back on the 1st of August, and they have since grown into large and voracious caterpillars. I keep them in a 10 gallon tank with milkweed stems in cups of water. You guys have no idea how much milkweed 20 fourth instar monarch caterpillars can go...
Well, my Sarracenia flava is out of dormancy, and I noticed a small hole punched in its first pitcher before it opened. Today, the top has browned and died off and I wondered what got to it. I broke off the top, peered inside, and saw lots of nasty brown/black granules of crud, and something...
I went outside yesterday to water my CPs, But when I was watering my VFT I noticed something was eating the leaves. It didn't take long to find what it was, since the plant is kind of small. It was a tomato fruitworm, which I've had problems with on my tomatoes. I immediately killed them and...
