    I like toitels.

Got incredibly lucky yesterday, and found this little guy struggling to get across four lanes of highway. How he made it as far as he did is a miracle. Tbh I didn't even know what it was when I saw it in the car. I've never seen a turtle this small, and thought it was a particularly slow lizard...

Jello Shots!....(for the plants, not you)

I wanted to wait before I said anything concrete, but as I ended up trading away most of my test subjects, it looks like things are on hold for awhile until the next batch of seedlings are large enough, and anyone who knows me, knows that I can be impatient with certain things... This began...

Photographing down the food web (silkworm pics)

Back in 1998 a group of scientists published a paper in Science that discussed how humans were “fishing down the food web” by first catching all of the big predatory fish on top of the food web, then smaller and smaller species until we end up targeting the small fish and invertebrates that were...

    Nepenthes Fertilization Experiment

Hello everyone. Before you start reading, I just want to clear up some stuff- 1. Yes, I am turning 12 years old. 2. Yes, I have only been growing plants since January. 3. No, I am not an insane Nepenthes murderer for trying this experiment when I'm a novice grower. I am trying to do an...

    Heli windowsill update

here is a picture of my Heliamphora heteradoxa x nutans from 12/27/08. When I got the plant it had 3 pitchers and no roots. Here's a pic I took after I re-potted the plant to a larger pot a few weeks ago. I think I may have made a mistake by not dividing when I re-potted it, it's been going...

    VFT Food Selections

Sorry guys, I have to ask. What kind of bugs to feed my VFTs. I know enough not to feed them hotdogs at least... I fed my typical rosette a small beetle that was crawling around and also tried a small cut piece of earthworm in another trap on the same plant. We'll see what happens. I wanted...

Eat bugs to save the plants that do, too!

My school has an annual bugathon, where volunteers eat mealworms, crickets, grubs, superworms, and all that general fun stuff. People sponsor those people per crawler and the money is donated to the southeast Michigan land conservatory. I just thought it was an interesting fundraiser. Anyone...

MealWorms, or not MealWorms, that is the Question...

I'm thinking to start feeding my Rafflesiana with dried mealworms once per week but I dont know if I can just put the worms straight on the pitchers or I should smash the worms a little in order to break the exoskeleton... What you recommend? Is there some other kind of dry food that I can use?

    Problems with VFTs

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I skipped introducing myself in favor of asking a pressing question: Why do my VFTs keep dying on me? I feed the insects and I water them once a week or whenever the peat looks or feels less moist that I think it should be. Not a lot of creepy crawlies like...

Can I feed other than crickets?

Can I feed my Fire Bellied Toads something other than crickets? Crickets are not cheap and now that all of mine died because of the darn ants, I kinda don't want to do it again. I heard that mealworms are too tough for the frogs. My husbands coworker said he used wingless fruitflies, but aren't...

Sacrifice of N. x 'Emmarene' pitchers

Hubby is in the habit of feeding mealworms to my larger pitchers without me knowing so when I saw the shadow of a mealworm in one of the pitchers, I decided to take a peep in to see if it has already been digested. I nearly threw up when I saw a dead lizard instead!! I checked the other pitchers...

I'm breeding mealworms to feed to the hedgehog, birds, and also for my Dionaea while I'm at it. I've got a 10 gallon aquarium with like half an inch of oat meal in there, and tomorrow I'll add wheat germ, wheat bran, and corn meal so I'll have about three inches of substrate. A turtle with vitamin a deficiency

We went to my brother's house yesterday and their painted turtle has Vitamin A deficiency. They have a map turtle too that's OK. The turtles get good turtle pellets, with some mealworms. But the painted turtle only eats the worms. A vet gave my sister-in-law Vitamin A drops to put on the...
