Nep cuttings and slitting the stem

I was wondering if it is necessary for cuttings to be slit along the sides when trying to get them to root. I can't find any reference to this in the Savage Garden. I checked on my 2 month old cuttings, most have some new leaf buds growing, but no roots. I was wondering if this is why. Thanks.

prolly depends. ive had them root without slitting but i normally do it, especially with older woddy stems like with veitchii.

It gives it more surface area for roots to grow out of, so while it's not necessary, it sure helps.

I do that with all nep cuttings. Seems to encourage roots to appear faster than the usual slant cut.
