Ampullaria Brunei Red Update

I just cleaned out my Lowland tank and figured I would snap some pics. I initially cut up my Amp Brunei Red mother and it was looking haggard, I thought I would lose it. It looked worse than it does in this first pic, as it was missing more leaves than that pictured, and the remaining 5 leaves or so were REAL ugly. I kept a cutting which has grown real nicely... today however I noticed that my mother Amp has recovered with a vengeance and is starting a basal rosette mania.

Wow! Fantastic! How many tanks do u have daniel?? WOW! I thought you had a highland tank only. :)

PS: DO u mind me asking....and others especially ol' timers like glider, PK, JLP and so on please pitch in as well.... How much do u guys spend or have spent on neps alone? The reason I am asking is I am thinking of adding more plants (eg: small aristo = 40$) which brings my total to nearly a 120$ +. The most I have ever ever spent on plants. Of course..if I add up all my plants it will be over this value....but I never spent this much at once...the most I spent was a 100 for getting my 3 neps from BE last year.

Man, I want a brunei so bad!

Hehe thanks Varun :). I have 4 40gallon breeder tanks, 3 20gallon high tanks, and 2 5gallon mini tanks. If I wasn't renting I would have built a greenhouse instead, but oh well.

I have spent more money on Neps than I care to think about (probably a few grand). I haven't spent as much as a lot of people out there, but I have blown a lot of cash on plants lately (esp. since I've only been collecting for about 14 months or so). I've been thinking about ordering from Germany, but then I finalized my list came out to 420$, for 2 Hamatas, 2 Macrophyllas, 1 Flava, 1 Amp Giant, and 5 Veitchii x lowii. Gotta love that weak American Dollar. That's kinda pricey for 11 plants (fresh out of TC) but I might go ahead and order anyway. Nepenthes addiction sucks lol. Oh well, at least I'm not buying drugs or something.

wow! Macro, hamata, flava?? thats a heck of a drooling combo there. Damn Daniel! Thats a **** load of money. lol! I guess my 120$ isn't that bad after all. :p lol!

i'm envious, my ampullaria grows in 80%+ humidity, 75F+ temp, sits on my sunniest windowsill, and has yet to produce a single pitcher :headwall:

Thanks for the comments everyone :). I am really starting to love this plant now that it is finally doing something for me. When I first got it, it did nothing for about 4-5 months.

Mine used to grow under T5 lights, but for the last month has been under T8s (6- 4' bulbs). I also keep the humidity above 80%, but I would say maybe even 90%. I don't have a hygrometer in that tank anymore because it was constantly getting so wet and stopped working. I do keep the lowland tank really hot too. I use a water heater and a pool of water under eggcrate. When I open the tank I can feel the hot humid air hit me. So far everything is growing real nice in it. Especially Effulgent Koto. That plant grows almost too fast for my tastes. I had to cut it back some. Anyway, I would shoot for a consistent 80+F, maybe this will help. Just a suggestion though, I'm still a newb :).

Ampullaria is so sweet..
I want one so badly.

wow man! damn! I don't even want to try lowlanders in any high capacity. The only single lowlander I have (of my 6 neps lol! :p) is a bicalcarata. Reason for not going into lowlanders is that they get huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge and grow fast. :p lol! The more and more I see it....I prefer slow growing highland neps like lowii, rajah and so on. :p lmao! Basically plants that are slow as mountains. The bical growing in less than optimal conditions also grows pretty slow so that is good enough for me. :p If there are a couple of lowlanders I would love to get : campanulata, northiana. But I am pretty sure providing the conditions for the northiana is as hard as emulating ultra highland conditions.

But good job mate! keep it up. :)

That's true, there's no way I could give that plant what it needs.

Too much trouble.

Great plant. Lots of healthy pitchers open at once - I like.

Hey due the fact that we are talking about ampullaria, there is something that I want to ask...

How long the pitchers on ampullarias last?

I ask this because is going to be soon 1 year since I get my ampullaria (green form) and still have pitchers from when I get it... I think I have cut 2 or 3 dried pitchers only.

I haven't had any of my Amps for a year, but from what I've read from others, they can last to well over a year. Keep us posted and let us know how long yours last :).
