Nepenthes robcantleyi (formerly known as Black Truncata)

  • #121
Yeah this particular plant has me really excited. I can't wait to see how each new pitcher will look. It's interesting with the seed grown plants how variable the pitchers can be and how some plants grow faster than others.

Has anyone noticed better growth with these in intermediate vs. highland conditions? I was growing them intermediate but have switched to highland (for space reasons).

Mine seem to grow much better as HL....they HATE the heat.

Good to know, Exo. Glad I made the switch when I did.

  • #123
I have been growing mine in highland since I got them. They coming along fine. :)

I'm so jealous of you guys!! I feel like Ive been scammed! I paid for a black truncata and mines green with a slight purple color on the peristome and lid, I know it isn't from a lack of light either. I was wondering if any body else on here has a very light clone

Mine's been growing outside for the past year in San Diego, so it gets intermediate through to uhl conditions. I'd say it doesn't like uhl at all, but highland through intermediate it grows like a weed.

Mine has grown quite a bit in the past year from an inch or two seedling last June to a 12 inch+ plant. I over fertilized it with coffee which helped with size growth but made the plant stop pitchering. It looks like it is starting back up again with this first small pitcher in a few months and more on the way.

Some of mine are like that too. I have some from an older batch that are larger and darker and some from a newer batch that are like yours. I'm guessing they'll color up more as they mature.

DAAAANG!!! Only one year??!! Wow. That coffee packs a punch. I fertilize mine with coffee but only every 6 months or so.

A new pitcher popped open today and I am so excited that I can't even wait for it to finish opening before posting a few pics.

First here is a pic of the newest pitcher on June 20, 2010

Wow.

Over-fertilization:

FTW

lol. I guess it was annoying for the months I had to wait to see it pitcher again but now I can see it was worth the sacrifice. I think I'll take it a little easier on the coffee from here on out so I can keep seeing these beauties.

Update from tonight. It is starting to show some of it's parents famous peristome flare as well as picking up a bit of color.

Can't wait to see it catch up with pitchers, too!

@Neps_N_Things: I would be super excited about that pitcher, too! WOWWWWW. I'm stoked for the updates!

May I ask how much coffee you used on it, and how often?

  • #135
Is it liquid, beans or ground?

  • #136
I used just liquid black coffee probably about once every 3 weeks to a month for probably seven months and every leaf was dramatically bigger than the last and it seemed to love it so I kept on going. Eventually though it stopped setting pitchers so I left it alone to detox and that probably took 3 months before it started inflating pitchers again. The first pitcher was that real small one you can see in the earlier pitchers. Now it has the huge one and another medium sized one just opened since for some reason it decided to backfill and inflated a tendril on an earlier leaf. There is a pitcher forming on the long tendril you can see in the previous post which I think should be even bigger than the one shown here.

Anyway I think this pitcher should be finished opening and coloring up in a day or two and I'll do a final update on it then.

  • #137
Final update on that pitcher. The peristome folded back more than I thought it would but still by all regards a real beauty. I expect it will continue to get darker over the next week until it turns almost fully black like the peristomes on the previous pitchers.

That thing is fantabulous. So far the best one i've seen. How old is it, out of curiosity?
