Do they all have this type of peristome at some stage? All of the pics I have seen of mirabilis var echinostoma seemed to have a contiguous peristome and not one made of what looks to be "tentacles".

the little teeth are a trait of echinostoma. maybe youve seen younger ones, or the teeth werent protruding, but rather laying down against the peristome or just slightly raised as seems to be the case in many of the echinostoma photos ive seen.
