Wow! Those photos! What did you use for a setup to take the photos? Those are incredible!

Wow! Those photos! What did you use for a setup to take the photos? Those are incredible!

Thanks Natch! I shoot on a desk underneath a skylight in my house; I just use a piece of thin cardboard that's white on one side for the background and white printer paper for the foreground. I set the camera on a tripod with a ballhead and shoot using Canon's EOS utility on my desktop computer (so I can see what's in focus very clearly). I tweak the RAW photos in Photoshop to resize and recolor if necessary. It's not super sophisticated but I've been getting better at it. I don't take any equipment with me to school, so I use my phone's camera then -- the difference is pretty stark.

I would actually much rather be able to shoot my highland plants in the rack they grow in, but I've found it difficult to get the exposure and focus right for several reasons.

(My dad is the real photography nerd in the family; he taught me just enough to operate the camera and I've been faking it ever since. :p)

Can we get a Clue as to what species of nepenthes those are?

While hard to tell because of the white background, all of the photos are thumbnails with labels if you hover over them (sorry about the white on white) -- if you click on them you can see the names as titles in Flickr. In order:

 • Nepenthes glandulifera,
 • N. fusca Sabah,
 • N. maxima "Wavy Leaves",
 • N. boschiana G. Sakumbang,
 • N. albomarginata Penang,
 • an unknown taxon from Langkawi Island,
 • N. tobaica x tentaculata,
 • N. chaniana BE, and
 • N. mira BE.

It helps that I grow mostly species so those keen on Nepenthes should usually be able to tell what's what. ;)

I see them now, thanks. I'm not really nep savvy, since I only have three neps, all of which are Ventricosa hybrids.

If you've come looking for N. edwardsiana, N. hamata, or the other Nepenthes species everyone wants, you've come to the wrong thread.

Forgot the namesake of this thread, oops! This newest pitcher is 7 inches tall.

And the closely related N. glandulifera: this seed grown plant from BE just made this lightly variegated leaf. :-O Not sure if this will be stable, but here's to hoping.

You can really see how large and healthy the root system on that one nep grown in the plastic cup is. What is it?

Hi Grey Moss, that is my N. northiana. Ironically, for the longest time it didn't have any roots, because it's a touchy species that takes a while to get established.

It'll be exciting to see how that northiana develops in the coming years.
BTW this is my second account after losing my password to the first one. I was Mr. Truncata. I traded you an izumae a few years ago. You still have it?

That N. boschiana is really coming along. Thats always been one of my favorites, oddly its one of the ones I don't have...

Man, I wish I still did, but I was a lot worse with plants back then and the species has since disappeared from the market. Nice to hear from you again! Kinda wish we could go back a few years, I remember when I could buy a 6" N. lowii for $20.

It's a great plant, although I pay more attention to its close cousin N. faizaliana (which is a much poorer grower for me unfortunately). No promises but the N. boschiana does have a few basals just breaking the surface right now.

Well, if you ever accidentally break a basal, I'sure i have something I could trade you...

Man I hear you on the going back a few years, N. lowii used to be everywhere. Now there is a 4" SG N. lowii on eBay for 500+ right now. Makes my little pot of marud N. lowii seedlings look like a variable pot of gold...

I know what you two mean. I just want to find another truncata but it's just been impossible. Not a single online nursery carries it. I would have thought availability would increase over the past 5 years instead of decrease. It's just been tough to find a lot of the plants that were available back then. When was the last time you saw a N. Red Dragon for sale? I wonder if the nurseries in the US just sold all their stock and never replenished.
