I envy that campy rock...I love naturalistic looking setups and would love to do something like that for Mexican Pinguicula etc, but no room...
N. BE sp. 1 is an awesome taxon too; grows funky for me, but even small leaves put out rather large pitchers.

You got campy basals! So excited to see your setup evolve. Are you planning on trying to manipulate the vine, bonsai style?

Wonderfully grown plants as usual. Have you taken a look under the surface to see what those runners look like?
Thanks Grey Moss; I haven't taken a look under the surface as the entire arrangement is very fragile and I don't want to damage the plants. Losing my N. campanulata would be a tragedy so I've done as little with it as necessary.

Hi Hawken, nice to hear from you. :) It's a nice setup for sure but my plans for the future include moving spare basals to pots since I'm not sure how permanent the entire arrangement will be. I really like natural setups as well and planning them really motivates me to learn more about a region's flora. I'm interested to hear back about how sp. 1 grows for you, the plant's a real phantom information-wise.

Hey Jon, unfortunately not - the stem lignifies as soon as a leaf dries so the whole thing ends up too difficult for me to comfortably manipulate; the green internodes are too short to do much anyways. I think the cascade style suits it since they do hang in the wild, I'll just need a taller display pedestal if I ever do display them again. Yours are looking great btw! I should update my GIF too, it's been another year of growth already: https://cantharifera.wordpress.com/2016/08/17/rock-loop/

Sp. 1 is about a medium-rate grower, and I'm sure that if the soil was fully fresh and kept at the same rate of moisture (until recently the moss was not wicking water all too well) the rate of size increase would be steadier, but even on messed up leaves pitchers still at least exceed 6" long at all times, usually a bit larger and I'll bet will get far bigger once the plant actually starts vining and setting out big leaves.

A new one, Nepenthes rajah x jacquelineae. I hope this one does well for me, neither parent has proven an easy grower for me.

My mama N. ventricosa is in spike for the second time this year. I would love to make some seed but time constraints don't allow it.

Bonsai N. northiana since I don't have space for a full-grown monster. Oddly this is one of the easiest lowlanders I have ever grown, it's never given me any trouble.

N. sp. 1 (Sumatra) has been a very easy plant so far, it is a surprisingly fast grower and is quickly gaining some size.

N. copelandii (Mt. Apo) and N. zygon (Mt. Pasian) -- although N. zygon was the "Pasian copelandii", these species are very distinct and the separation seems warranted. N. zygon is a very pretty species, it's a shame it's basically impossible to find now.

  • #146
I didn't know you grew northiana. It looks great, although the container you have for it seems pretty small. Both the copelandii and the zygon look nice too. The side-by-side pic really highlights the differences between them.

Very nice! Love the zygon, both it and copelandii are very underrated species IMO

Thanks Nim, I don't give the N. xiphioides any special conditions. It grows as a regular highlander. I used to keep it shaded when it was still a cutting but after acclimating it to more light, the lamina's gotten much smaller and redder.

The Belirang clones are highly underrated IMO, they're definitely less popular than the hyped-up Tujuh form but excellent plants! The two clones I have could theoretically be the same clone (since there are only 9 of them in the batch), at least some of the difference is because the first one is less mature than the second.

Nice to see the zygon coloring up. And your nigra looks amazing!
I was thrilled to see how colorful the N. zygon got, I didn't expect it to look so nice; it's working on a basal or two right now, I'm very excited to see some lowers. The N. nigra is still giving me some trouble but that pitcher does look nice.

Nepenthes eymae x ephippiata is probably my favorite hybrid because of these wacky uppers - the shape is almost impossible to represent well in a picture, it's truly a bizarre hybrid.

Thanks Grey Moss, she's a girl and flowers pretty regularly although I don't have time to make any crosses.

The quarter's wrapping up and I've been procrastinating like usual, must be this spring weather. I don't have a great lighting source in my apartment but tried to take some pictures because my tank stuff looks passably decent.

N. adnata is a slow one for me but I've finally got some size on it. This pitcher just opened today.

Fresh N. bicalcarata (Marudi). I've set it back a whole bunch of times although it's never died. Ironically, I've thought of this species as one of the most beautiful in the genus ever since I first read Slack's books in a local library as a kid but really haven't tried to grow it well.

Happy N. bellii

Took a couple of highlanders with me, I've noticed that establishing plants in tanks helps them get their roots going. They also pitcher better on the first leaves they make compared to rack growing, so I can feed them quicker and they can gain some size.

Also I don't trust my parents with my N. klossii. This one came with no roots as a fresh BE import, I wasn't expecting the growth to look so good so fast.

New-ish N. pitopangii leaf jump; heard this one was a vigorous species and it seems to show. The pitchers I fed bit the dust remarkably quickly but it looks like it got something out of it.

N. adnata doesn't put out leaves too fast for me either, but it grows larger at a decent pace. I'm surprised at the lack of color on your plant though, my pitchers look very boschiana-like.

Yeah, the lower pitchers on the web seem to be pretty uniformly brown; I certainly don't mind the contrast though. I wouldn't be surprised if it can get much darker - even though it's in a tank with lots of LEDs, it's actually growing underneath a medium-sized rambling N. northiana so it's pretty shaded.

N. eymae (BE-3660); not convinced it isn't N. maxima but I've noticed there's a surprising amount of variability in N. eymae lower pitchers in cultivation, and some plants with less extreme-looking lowers still make the classic wineglass uppers.
