A nice new leaf.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/61904224@N05/28151099744/in/dateposted-public/" title="Nepenthes clipeata Clone U"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8775/28151099744_293a182fd0_z.jpg" width="640" height="427" alt="Nepenthes clipeata Clone U"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
As the leaf continues to grow, the plant gives up on trying to keep it upright.

Plummeting tendril on a nice peltate leaf.

New pitchers aren't much to look at when they first open, the shape gets better over time.

That is very interesting. I've never seen such a good picture of the leaf structure before. I've had the leaf/tendril anatomy described to me before but seeing it is another matter altogether.

Very nice Clue, how long have you been growing it by now? And what's the plant you have growing with it in that pot?

  • #24
very cool! N. clipeata is one of if not my favorite LL. I just love how it seems to try and hide its pitchers with its leaves like that. Its like its shy or something.

Direct from page 2 ;)
Thanks Zu, it's a Paphiopedilum amabile (=bullenianum?), which grows sympatrically on Kelam with N. clipeata as per this photo by Ch'ien Lee.
and I've had the plant since about 2012/2013

Here's a worthwhile documentary made by Stew recently about Gunung Kelam and N. clipeata; this is an amazing insight into the species' ecology for those unfamiliar with it. I was surprised to see the level of forest on top of the mountain, as I've only seen pictures Ch'ien Lee shot of exposed colonies in full sun. Probably just a dream, but I really want to climb Kelam one day.

I was in London attending the ICPS when this video was presented by Steward. He introduced then the project Ark of life, very good project imo, and encouraged the growers of clipeata to register or get in contact with the Ark of life in order to increase the population ex-situ of N. clipeata with the different lineages in private collections.

I was also in London for the ICPS conference, a great video and project.

Any truth that the clone U is female?

I've never heard any claims that Clone U is female. Sam Estes flowered a Clone U around 2014 (a few years after he flowered a Clone 2) and said his is male. While Wistuba claims one of his customers flowered an AW N. clipeata as a female, the claim was completely anecdotal and Wistuba used to have several more clones for sale (including some hybrids) that were since lost or discontinued. I guess we'll get further confirmation in several years, as a few of us have larger Clone U's right here on the forums.

Here's a nice cream-colored basal pitcher that just opened on my plant:

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/61904224@N05/29032447250/in/dateposted-public/" title="Nepenthes clipeata Clone U"><img src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7471/29032447250_3a79306745_z.jpg" width="427" height="640" alt="Nepenthes clipeata Clone U"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/61904224@N05/29320250205/in/dateposted-public/" title="Nepenthes clipeata Clone U"><img src="https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8280/29320250205_2eedd94a43_z.jpg" width="427" height="640" alt="Nepenthes clipeata Clone U"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/61904224@N05/28699353043/in/dateposted-public/" title="Nepenthes clipeata Clone U"><img src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8747/28699353043_6e65302009_z.jpg" width="427" height="640" alt="Nepenthes clipeata Clone U"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I'm not sure why the pitchers on the basal are so much lighter than the pitchers on the main growth.

I think there should be more pictures nd info on the internet about the cultivation of Clipeata. Anyone else grow N. Clipeata and want to share pics, growing conditions, etc.?? Any thoughts on growing Clone 2 in intermediate or highland conditions?
