    lowii
I recently took this closeup shot of the underside of the
operculum of an upper N. lowii pitcher, and thought
that it might interest those who have not seen such a thing
in person. This variety of the species is from G. Mulu, BTW.

The thick, white exudate for which this species is so well
known is clearly visible. I've heard it tastes like lemon
sherbet, but have not had the inclination to taste it for
some reason....

Hey,
Nice shot! That "sherbet" looks promising....

Is this a shot of a plant in cultivation?

That is one of the wierdest photos I have ever seen!

Very nice shot of the operculum extrudate!

I have the courage to taste Nepentehs nectar....but that...i dunno.

Very interesting photo! To be honest, I won't be getting out my sherbert spoon when I see my lowii making this either!

Nectar is one thing, this stuff...

I would try it, but I don't have any clue what the expiration date is once it's harvested, lol.

Glad you got a kick out of the photo, gang!

Yes, this is a photo of a plant in cultivation.

I just obtained a great new digital camera, and used it
to create the image. Hopefully, I'll be able to post a
series of new, higher quality images from now on....

I've often noted strong, sweet, almost citrus-like aromas associated with certain Nepenthes. Does the lowii secretion have a fragrance/odor?

Ugh. Great shot, gross photo. Looks like the bird poop my wife's car got pelted with the other day....

I don't have the most sensitive nose, but the exudate seems to exude a very subtle sour smell. Overall, however, N. lowii does have the characteristic sweet scent which you describe. The flowers of this species are also somewhat unusual in that
they don't have the "cat piss" smell so commonly associated with Nepenthes flowers. Rather, I suspect they smell like a sweaty armpit which has been sprayed with deodorant. (Yes, I am serious!)
