Direct light..

Does it matter what the sun hits? The leaves, the pitchers? If direct light only the leaves, will the pitchers not change colors? Or what?

Assuming it's a Nep that prefers direct sun, direct sun to the leaves allows the plant to grow more, while direct sun to a pitcher will strengthen the pitcher's color. The pigment seems to develop locally. Hopefully a more experienced Nep grower will chime in to confirm (or deny) this.

Whatever the answer, how are you proposing to shield the light from hitting one and not the other?

Strong light is needed for pitcher color as well as healthy growth of leaves. Otherwise leaves will be spindly and no color to pitchers, BTW a spindly leaf wont pither either.
