Basal shoots

I've got a magic window!
I have never dug around and looked, so here is my question about basal shoots.
Do the basal shoots which appear at the base of the mother plant have it's own root system? Or might it depend on age.
I have a few large plants that have been growing at the base for about a year.
 
Depending on the species.

N. ampullaria will have some roots on them while others such as my N. hamata will be attached to the climbing vine.

Here's a basal pitcher off the N. hamata BTW.
