They do best with bright, diffused light. I had my N. coccinea and N. miranda hanging outside under a tree last year, and they did great. They got almost no direct sun.
I'd say it is wise to put them under some sort of shade, like a tree. This will help to avoid the beating they recieve from the midday sun. Otherwise, go ahead. It really depends on the type, and where you live though. We need that info to give you a definite answer.
