ok so what do i do with it now? i'll get pics in a bit. it looks better than anything home depot has ever had. the inside of the traps are actually red. so do i uncover, water, put in tray, and set in full sun? help so i don't kill this one!

They just got them in here too. They look VERY healty with dark red in the traps, they look MUCH healthier that the Home Depot/Lowes plants. I'm gonna pick some up today, you have the right idea on what to do. They should live, no problem. I'll also post pics of them when I get 'em.

trap, all those plants are dead from the begining.

I would definitely put it outside, but in the shade at first. Then gradually move it to full sun, in a container of water. Did the plants just come in? Were they a fresh shipment?

I have a few that came from Walmart, and they are growing fine.I just put them in full sun, thats what I do with all my vft and sarrs. But you might want to er on the side of caution and take jimscotts advice.

they just came in and look very healthy. even if it is dead oh well i kill everything anyways! lol! like i said when i get a chance i'll get pics. they are in a window sill right now.

My mom's an anti walmart activist. She and her friends have kept wal-mart out of my town for 13 years. So no luck for me. But i doubt they would get the VFTs to Canada anyway. On the plus side the new home depot opens 500metres (1/4 mile for you imperial weirdos) from my house this fall

I bought one today and they are very alive. They just came in like 2 days ago so soon they will be dead if they don't sell, but right now they are in great shape.

Whats dead or going to die is the stuff they just got in at Lowes. They are selling "mini terrariums" with three different CP's stuffed into those cubes. I can't belive they are doing that, I saw a Nep planted in with a VFT and a Sundew. If that is not bad enough they put Cobralily's in with VFT's and Neps. Whats wrong with them?? Those combinations wont live together through dormancy. Not to mension they plant them together in a way that makes it hard to seperate them.

I bought one from Walmart and now it has traps over 1 inch (that's 2.54cm for you socialistic wierdos).

LOL! actually between here and traveling to Canada on a semi regular basis im getting fairly good at converting in my head. well other than temps, thats to complicated. i down loaded one heck of a useful lil progran that will convert almost anything.

for those of you that are anti-Walmart. check local greenhouses and such. i purchased the exact same VFTs from a greenhouse that wally world is selling and they only cost me about an extra $1.50 a pot.

I've rescued VFT from several local places. I always transplant them right away and stick them in full sun outdoors. The existing traps slowly die-back, but are quickly replaced by new traps that are able to handle temp, humidity, and light extremes much better. The tough part about getting VFTs now is that they are supposed to be easing into dormancy.

yeah so that was my net question. since it's supposed to be going into dormancy what do i do? do i just skip it till next year or what? also i still don't completly understand the whole process could someone maybe help me with that? sorry for all the questions but that's how one learns right? hopefully by next year i won't be as needy!

Dormancy seems to describe two phenomena. One is the actual process and the other is like a deep sleep. The process part is what a plant is naturally going through as the photoperiod decreases, beginning in the summer. The temps are still hot and the days are still long. The plant is still growing, but things are changing. This process contimues through the summer and fall, culminating in a deep sleep in the lat fall/winter. The process part and the deep sleep part often get confused. Conversely, in the middle of winter, the photperiod is increasing while the temps are still cold. But it will soon be time for the plant to be waking up.

Your plant typically should be experiening the process of dormancy right now, though it won't be in a deep sleep for another several weeks. It needs a dormancy, just as we need sleep.

People tend to think of dormancy in terms of temperature, disproportionate to photoperiod. but light seems to be more significant, certainly more significant than, relative to temperature - but both are important.

A dormant VFT exhibits little or no growth when dormant. Mine were cold enough so that the 3 traps the were in development when it went into a deep sleep, just stopped developing. When I took it out of the fridge and placed it on a cold window sill to warm up slightly, the traps continued to develop.

My VFT's are outside, experiencing 80 degree temps, but the light has been decreasing since late June. It is still putting out leaves, but it is also "easing" into dormancy.

I've heard of people skipping dormancy for a year because they bought the plants in the fall/winter.  This is my first year growing VFTs so I don't really know what to expect.  My plants are outside and are experiencing temps into the low 40F's at night.  The summer traps are dying back, and are being replaced by small, ground hugging rosettes.  Everything is going as planned, and now I need to determine a good place for them.  I have several, so I'll put them in different places to see how they react.

We have countless (and passionate) debates as to whether a TC, Fall-purchased plant ought to skip dormancy or not. The thing is, even if a VFT hits a Lowes or Home Depot in September, the plant is big enough to indicate that it is old enough to be over a year old. If it never had a dormancy before that, it certainly needs one now! Another thing to consider, even the youngest VFT's, from out in the wild, more than likely came from plants that flowered in the Spring. Those plants, as tiny and young as they are, go through dormancy, whether they like it or not. I'm thinking that we humans are afraid that they are too delicate to get through some freezing and thawing. But these plants have adapted to it.

Brian, what worked well for me was to leave the plants outside until the overnight low forecasts were going to be below 30. By then the plants are pretty much asleep. Then I put the plants in the fridge and believe it or not, without fungicide or in a baggie - as is, open tray. I kept them barely wet and waited until wew were on the other side of Winter. That worked for me!

Hmmm interesting. I came home for the weekend to pick up some stuff for college and we made a pit stop at another different wal-mart so of course I go to check out the vfts and what do I find? A Vft with fused teeth! So of course I bought it. I'll see if I can borrow a friends digital camera to take pictures of it but I swear it's almost identical to the cultivar VFT "fused tooth"

Our Wal_Mart got some as well; commons, dente's, and BIG MOUTHS!!
5.00

They were planted in what appears to be peat and coconut fibers.

I gave them cool Sun for two days; repotted them and have them (all 6) under flourescents right now. They were fresh stock as no new growth had undersize traps; so I knew they would be alright. (in my hands, anyway). I feel sorry for those hapless people who buy them and follow the instructions that come with them. They just wasted their money.
