thats a new one for me!

40's is fine, you dont need to bring them indoors..
and it takes more than one or two nights for any plant to enter dormancy..

dormancy is a long, slow, drawn-out process.
it actually begins in July/August as photoperiod and temps slowly decrease through all of august-september-october.
it takes 3 months for a plant to "enter dormancy"..
one or two nights, even a week or two, of unusual cold will not confuse the plants..

your winters might be a bit warm for a good dormancy..
but you still have plenty of time of work it out.

i beleev a wifebeater is just one of those plain white shirts with no sleeves and it is sometimes used as an under-shirt.

^^ Yeah he's right ^^

Its also called an A frame shirt. Down south we always call them wifebeaters b/c the guys that wear 'em are mostly wife beatin' rednecks.

Quote[/b] (Carito @ Feb. 27 2006,11:47)]Regarding cold, weather, it's always hot here, but the very first 6-7 days I had my Venus Fly Traps, the LA Basin suffered a streak of bizarre cold nights, dipping to low 40's.
Caro that taint cold. That's T-shirt and shorts weather (if the wind ain't blowin to bad). VFT's are fine clear down to the low 30's if they are hardend up to the outdoors. I start putting my hardier* plants outside when the temps get 40°F or warmer.

*hardier plants = VFTs, Saracenia, D. binata, D. capensis, etc.

I NEARLY FELL OFF MY CHAIR LAUGHING TO DEATH!! AHHAHA

ps. thank you for the dormancy explanation. I didn't know it was actually a slow, drawn-out process, or that it takes 3 months for a plan tto enter dormancy. that was VERY helpful and clears a lot up, thank you!
pps. Phong told me he raises his plants outside 27/7/365days ayear, and Cerritos and Temecula can't be more than 1 hour away, so I was glad to hear that I don't HAVE to put my plants in the fridge in winter 2007.

here is a wife beater.
I'm so tempted to say, "Yeah, ok, but weren't we talking about clothing?"

... but I just know someone would accuse me of being racist or something without further explanation.

Repot you flytraps into a larger pot that can dols all of them, something a foot in diameter, or more. That will help regulate soil temp.

My potting medium of choice for VFTs is milled long fiber sphagnum, top-dressed with live sphagnum.

If you can't find milled sphagnum, or don't have an old food processor to mill it, or don't want to do the "scissors method", then plain old long fiber sphagnum is great, too. I only prefer milled because it makes repotting easier.

Unpot and bare-root the VFTs from their old medium, and plant them in a new, large pot filled with long fiber sphagnum. Keep them outside -- the environmental fluctuations make them stronger.

VFTs do best with dappled light. They don't appreciate baking all day in hot sun.

That style of t-shirt is also sometimes called an "Archie Bunker", for the TV character who used to wear it.
