wot in tarnation?

That's something I have only seen happen with dandelions! Never thought it could happen to flytraps.

This is a phenomenon known as fasciation. It is caused by many different factors...genetics, hormonal imbalance, viruses, fungi, bacteria, and environment. Plants derived from tissue culture can exhibit this frequently. This is because hormones are added in tissue culture to induce rapid multiplication of the plants. Being that you are seeing it in a VFT, I'm guessing that it is a store bought plant that was probably grown from tissue culture and not seed grown. If it is seed grown, then any one of the above factor may be to blame. The good news is that this usually does not affect the health/lifespan of the plant if grown correctly. Some plant cultivars are selected and grown for this weird plant behavior.

Hope that helps.

Not unheard of phenomenon in many plants.

Looks like some mealy bugs or relatives on that growth ... at least in the first photo.

Correct DE, it looks like mealy bug. Unfortunately/ fortunately it isn't :-O
