God must have an interesting sense of humor
I have seen this as both. My question is this: "Is a Dionaea 'Red Dragon' simply the translation for 'Akai Ryu', or is there confusion surrounding whether they are the same thing?" I am a big fan of nomenclature and I do not like when there is confusion around whether a registered cultivar is just a uniquely named plant.

They're the same thing, just different language. A registered cultivar is also just that: a uniquely named cultivated plant.
