all last week my vft had a major growth spurt, and now this week, it looks like it is in suspend aniamation. is that a problem? i am giving it the same as last week, same water, sun.

It happens like that.
There is no problem with the plant.
If they all go black and none grow, panic
Just keep on doing what you are doing. The plant seems to like it.
The new shoots have to be grown underground, from the bottom of the rhizome, so it's probably growing like mad under the peat. The new shoots should appear soon.
