Yes, this is fine. Any thing with transparent walls and able to have a cover fitted will serve as a terrarium. smaller containers heat up more quickly though, which is not optimal for many species.
Aquariums are what most people seem to use. I just threw out a 70gallon tank I used to have a 2.5'+ arowana in, that died when the heater went failed during a cold winter night. I could've used it for plants! DOH!!
