Hi collin, you can feed your flytrap most any bug that's small enough to fit into the trap with out any legs or other parts sticking out. The bugs most commonly recommended to not feed a VFT are ladybugs and ants. They tend to kill the trap.
A couple of bugs each month is all you need to feed your VFT. You don't really need to feed your VFT, they'll grow fine without bugs. They just won't grow as quickly or as large as a plant that catches an occasional bug. It's best to feed VFTs live bugs as the trigger hairs need to be tripped again by the bug after the trap closes. I've tried ticking the plant using a toothe pick to tickle the triggers and gently squeezing the sides of the trap and usually only succeeded in damaging the trap and/or the trigger hairs.
