I've gone limp!

I repotted my vfts, which had started to clump, and separated them into two different pots. One of the plants is doing ok, but the other has gone pretty limp. I think this is usual after repotting, and I wanted to know if I should try to feed it something. Would the energy required to digest an insect be too much for it to be worth feeding? And, should I introduce them to sunlight slowly? Any help would be appreciated.

Put them in sunlight. It is quite common for a venus flytrap to look ill after reppotting, dony worry, they will recover quickly.

Experiment time! What happens when we feed a VFT viagra??

Well, someone was gonna say it...

Hmm. I think I'll try the Viagra thing.

Hey Warlock. I have heard that SUPERthrive works really well with that. I just transplanted mine put a drop of that in some water and watered them with it, and they perked up the same night. They are not quite settled in yet and growing real fast....but they seem to be stable. It's not really a fertilizer, but it has a lot of vitamins essential to plants. I've heard it's great, and am just starting to use it. I got mine here:

Bonsai of Brooklyn

Good luck!

Thanks, firewired. My one vft that was kind of limp is starting to perk back up. I guess it was just shocked. I've been keeping both of my vfts inside so that they don't get sunburned. Is it ok to start feeding them again?

the viagra comment was priceless!

btw, where does one get (not viagra) superthrive...hmmm, one in the same?

PFT sells it here at the bottom of the page:  Superthrive

for all you Southeastern Pennsylvanians: Mutschlers Exotic Plants sells it and rooting hormone as well.

Common fot VFTs to look ill after re-potting? Not sure about that... it isnt rare, but it isnt common either... for me anyways/

I suppose that if you re-pot it in the growing season they might do that. If the leaves are limp, somethings wrong... maybe it doesnt like the new potting mix, or maybe you let it dry out too long when you re-potted? The old leaves will probably stay limp and not come back, but new leaves should replace it and it will look normal again

Give it lots of light, water, hope for the best. Superthrive is a good idea too. It will probably grow new and improved traps soon enough

Also, no one has mentioned it yet, but on the literature I received from petflytrap.com (when I received my plants) says not to touch the roots, or it can damage the plant. Sometimes it can be difficult to transplant them without touching the root, and perhaps you did a little.

BTW, does anyone have experience with root hormone? If so, perhaps you can start a new post on the topic - tell us what you did and how it worked for you.

Thanks,
Scott

I agree with Spec, I transplant my plants regularly, and with a little care not to disturb the very fragile roots, there is never any problem. The plants don't even know it happened.

I have never used superthrive and so can't comment, but I have never had transplant shock so have never really needed it.

Keeping them out of full sun if they look stressed is a good idea until they adjust, but they will get weak if left inside for very long, lose their color and wiill have to get a little protection before sitting in full sun. They toughen up fairly quickly though.

What are the differences between terrarium 72W light and sunlight, besides the spectrum? I think mine's full spectrum bulb though - is it really neccessary because I heard that chorophyll only absorbs (well more of anyway) the blue and red ends of the light spectrum. Could a light pro please comment...

What the heck is viagra?

Maybe swish the soil around in a bowl of water until the plant is bare root, then slowly pack the roots inside with sphagnum moss or whateva potting mix you want. That's what I'm planning to do when I get around to repotting mine.

I think root hormone is made of of auxin (a plant growth hormone) and some other stuff, have to check the ingredients...

Jason, Viagra is what men take when they *ahem*, can't get it up. Spec, you're right. The old leaves are still fairly limp, but right before I transplanted, I fed it 3 flies, so a lot of new growth is coming up from the center. I'm pretty sure the old leaves will die, because they're a bit yellow. I can't tell if it's a new plant or not growing out of the middle because all of the leaves are pretty tiny. I might have stunted the growth when I transplanted. Here's what I did: I cleaned away all the sphagnum around the roots. I separated another plant that was growing along with it. Then, I let them soak for a few minutes in water with a few drops of orchid fertilizer. I didn't have Superthrive, so I figured orchid food was the next best thing. I then made a new potting mix of 50/50 sphagnum and peat moss. As I posted earlier, one of the plants is ok, and even though the other one is a bit yellow, the new growth seems fine.
