Term "photoperiod" as pertains to vfts

What does the term "photoperiod" mean as pertains to the requisite dormancy period in VFTs?  How do I do it?

Photoperiod is just a fancy way of saying hours of daylight. During peak summer growth the plants need about 13-16 hours a day. Dormancy is triggered, along with cooling temperatures, by a reduction in the photoperiod to about 10 hours.

Thank you for the explanation Alvin.
