Really cool mantis shrimp! I didn't know that there was more than one kind.

Beautiful creature! Never saw one that color before. How big is/was it? Amazed that it didn't kill the hermit crab or that the fish didn't eat it when it molted.

Thanks! I kept her for nearly 4 years. Females are distinguished from males by lack of 2 appendages. Shes was just over 3 inches long & the spearing type of mantis; however, she would use her elbows to smash through small crabs and knock out shrimp as well. I would feed her live & frozen food including glass shrimp, camel shrimp, chromis, silversides, pellets, & even goldfish! The goldfish needed to be cleared of waste & fed marine diet & also acclimated to saltwater over a couple days & then they would be able to swim in saltwater for a few hours (but they would only last a minute or so before becoming lunch). The damsel was nearly as big as her but the mantis would cover its tunnel with sand and stone while molting so she was safe. Here are a few more pictures of her tankmates:

Heteractis Malu (sebae anemone)

Epicystis Crucifer (rock flower anemone) this one isn't bleached as I had it for years & would glow green under actinic light

Yes.. the pics are bad I know. lol. The mantis shrimp would have also made the marine biology books if I had properly documented her egg sac & had a usb microscope as stated by Dr. Caldwell marine biologist & professor at UC Berkeley. I will post pictures of that as well but they're not the best.
